Beauty Beyond Skin Deep

Hi Loves, hope your all doing well.

I decided to document about my road to self acceptance. This is a journey that I have travelled on for a long time but finally I’m at peace with my self.

I remember being in school and having some boy bully me because of the colour of my skin. In my school days being of a darker skin tone wasn’t considered “beautiful”. Every day I had to go through the process of hearing the same boy torment me about my colour.”Your too black”, he would say.”You got lost in the dark” and so on. These words kept piercing through my heart. I started to question myself, am I good enough and definitely felt that I wasn’t “pretty” enough. The boy who was doing the bullying was black himself, so I failed to understand why my shade disturbed him so much.

I struggled with my self-esteem and thought I had to change In order to be loved. Over the years I have learned that insecure people will often insult or bully others to feel better about themselves, and I believe that was the case with my bully.

I believe many people of colour have been through this process and some are still going through it. They’ve felt inadequate due to the colour of their skin. It is a constant struggle and challenge that we are facing in our society.

With mainstream media constantly highlighting what “beauty” is, it a struggle for both young and mature women of colour to believe that they are beautiful whilst living in our society.Skin lightening products are used by millions of women and men across the globe. Toning, lightening, brightening, whitening are the regular products on the market. While the marketing slogans claim the products are promoting skin enhancement, the underlying effects are pretty identical.

But the issue of black beauty extends beyond skin colour and complexion. There’s also a cultural perception about hair, which is that certain textures are better than others. I recently saw a petition on petition on about Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy. Apparently, a group of citizens felt that her growing hair was “unkempt” and demanded Beyoncé combs it. What kind of message are we sending when thousands of people gather online to condemn a small child’s natural curly kinky strands. It is very clear that there’s a stigma against ethnic variations from sleek and straight and we need to recognise and appreciate that we are all born with unique gifts and appearance and we must learn to celebrate our uniqueness.

Beauty is not only measured in skin colour and hair texture, it is also measured through sizes. Thick vs skinny. The pressure is on people to look a certain way, all in the name of beauty. Women are starving themselves in hope for the perfect size, equally men are resulting to desperate measures to bulk up their bodies using steroids and other means to maintain their frame. The wrong motives have been put in place and it seems like it’s no longer about staying healthy but rather competing to look like certain people i.e celebrities.

Beauty is truly beyond skin, true beauty lies within. The beautiful personality inside that echoes through to the world. That golden heart , that can’t be seen but it’s works are visible. The world needs to get to the point where beauty is not totally measured by outward appearance because in reality the beauty of a face will fade as time goes, but the beauty of heart will grow as you mature.

I am learning to love and embrace myself. Love every part of me. My chocolate skin tone may not be everyone’s first choice and that’s ok. Yes there are plenty of things about my structure I may not be completely satisfied with, but these are the same things that distinguish me from the rest. My kinky hair may be difficult at times to keep up but I thank God I even have hair.

Yes black is beautiful, but also is white, brown, yellow and the many shades in between. Whatever shade you maybe, embrace it and be proud of it. If God wanted you to be a particular shade he would have made you so. Let’s not allow the pressures of this world to define who we are, or what we ought to look like.

Each and every day I am learning to embrace what God gave me naturally. I use the word ‘learning’ because to me , life is a learning process. I refuse to allow this society to define me as a person. I am who I am.

We have a long way to go to change the way we look at and interpret beauty but I’m happy to say and mean it that I am beautiful. It may not be your perfect definition of beauty but it’s me and I love me. Finally I have learned to feel empowered, and love myself just the way I am and I pray you begin to accept and love yourself just as you are.

Love always

This is one of my favourite songs by Yolanda Adam- never give up.

This song speaks volume to my heart, check it out and be blessed by the lyrics

Visions that can change the world trapped inside an ordinary girl
She looks just like me too afraid to dream out loud
And though it’s simple, your idea, it won’t make sense to everybody
You need courage now, if you’re gonna persevere

To fulfill divine purpose, you gotta answer when you’re called
So don’t be afraid to face the world against all odds

Keep the dream alive, don’t let it die
If something deep inside keeps inspiring you to try, don’t stop
And never give up, don’t ever give up on you
Don’t give up

Every victory comes in time, work today to change tomorrow
It gets easier, who’s to say that you can’t fly?
Every step you take you get closer to your destination
You can feel it now, don’t you know you’re almost there?

To fulfill divine purpose, you gotta answer when you’re called
So don’t be afraid to face the world against all odds

Keep the dream alive, don’t let it die
If something deep inside keeps inspiring you to try, don’t stop
And never give up, don’t ever give up on you

Sometimes life can place a stumbling block in your way
But you gotta keep the faith
Bring what’s deep inside your heart to the light
And never give up, don’t ever give up on you
Don’t give up

Who holds the pieces to complete the puzzle?
The answer that can solve a mystery, yeah
The key that can unlock your understanding
It’s all inside of you, you have everything you need, yeah

So, keep the dream alive, don’t let it die
If something deep inside, keeps inspiring you to try, don’t stop
And never give up, don’t ever give up on you

Sometimes life can place a stumbling block in your way
But you gotta keep the faith
Bring what’s deep inside your heart, yeah your heart to the light
And never give up, don’t ever give up on you
(Give up)
No, don’t give up

Who says “I CANT”

When the world brings you down
And hurtful words break your heart
Don’t turn around
And walk away from who you are

Stand up for your beliefs
Trust in what you know
In yourself you’ll find strength
Not in another soul

Life is full of chances
Some you’ll surely take
Though from some you’ll learn a lesson
And those we call mistakes

Just because someone tells you
That it can’t be done
Doesn’t mean you must adhere
Or that you should give up

What I want you to remember
And hold close to your heart
Is that you can do anything
If only you try
It doesn’t matter who you are

Dead End With An End

Ever felt like your life is going no where?

You have tried all you seem to know but still no change. You feel like giving up.

Well I’ve got news for you, that tunnel you are facing has an end. It has to come to an end, you’ve just got to keep pressing on.

I was driving on my way home, on my usual route. I came across lights and signs that told me my usual route had been blocked. So i took the closest road to me without knowing where it would lead. As i kept driving i wondered where i was going. I pulled up on the side road and attempted to ask on-going traffic from the opposite direction where the road would lead me to, and guess what? They all ignored me or drove past me.

I quickly realised that if i want to get from where i am to my desired location i have to move even though i may not know where i’m heading.

So i started driving and just kept going until i reached a familiar place. The end result was i made it. Not only did i make it, i have now discovered a new route to get me home.

Life can also seem like my road journey. You may feel lost or stuck in a place that may seem like a dead end. You look for people to help you but no one is there to assist you.

I want to encourage you to keep going. Push forward until you get to your desired destination. You may not know where the road will lead but the key is to keep moving. Just like me you will reach to a familiar place you recognise, which will lead you to that place you are trying to get to.

Those who stop or give up, they never get to see whats on the other side, and some times whats on the other side can sometimes be greater than your current position. There is a possibility that you could get on the other side of the road and not like what you see, but just like me you will learn a new thing, develop new ways of getting to places, but all in all you will learn something.

I don’t know how impossible your dreams may appear before you, but it is my desire for you to press on despite the obstacle you may face. If you don’t make a step, you could spend the rest of your life wondering “what if”

Well “what if “…… you could make it
What if your dreams could come to pass.
You will never know unless you make a start.

You may want people to help you on your journey or maybe you have asked people to help you but to no avail.
Again do your part, the right people will meet you on your journey and together you will work together.

Don’t be discouraged, your close to your break through.

Love always

The Sun will shine again.

This morning I woke up and looked outside the window. I saw the rain and the dark clouds and I just wanted to go back to bed. I got dressed and stepped out to face the day. The rain continued, and the dark clouds remained. I made sure my jacket was with me for when I needed it.

As people kept saying the day will get brighter and the sun will shine in the afternoon, I didn’t really believe them. I couldn’t see where the sun will come from. I imagined the day to be filled with rain and more rain because that is what I could see at that particular moment.
Few hours later, I stepped out again for my lunch, and to my surprise the weather had changed. The sun was out shining and the heat was just beaming. It was nothing like the cold, rainy weather I had experienced a few hours earlier on. Things had changed. People were no longer carrying their jackets or scarves, but rather they had their sunglasses, sandals and just their shirts.
I thought how quickly things can change.

You may look at your own life, and see all the horrible, unbearable things that are happening to you and you almost can’t see things ever changing, or maybe you’ve been waiting for change but nothing has happened and you just feel like giving up. Well…… I’ve got news for you. Things can change and things will change. The fact that you cannot see the change does not mean that the change will never occur. Your current circumstances do not have to determine your future, neither does your past.

I know it can be very difficult to be hopeful and positive, when everything surrounding you is telling you different, but in due course, with patience and preparation your sun will shine again.

Sometimes we’ve got to put aside what it is that we do see (our circumstances) and put our focus and energy on the things hoped for yet unseen. If you have enough patience and prepare yourself for that thing you want, when it finally comes you will be able to enjoy it.

It is important to have patience, whilst waiting for things to change. Lack of patience will cause you to get off track and lose focus. Equally it is very important to prepare yourself. Those who expected it to rain prepared themselves by having their umbrellas, jackets etc. Equally those who hoped for sunshine made their own preparation.

Whatever it is you’re hoping for or desire to have, make the necessary preparation for it, so that when it finally does happen you know the necessary things in order to preserve it.

A woman, who is expecting a child, will tell you how important preparation is. From the very moment she discovers she’s pregnant, she knows change has to happen and she’s got to prepare herself for the changes that are about to take place. Such changes can include changes in her dietary, changes in her sleeping hours, also physical changes. These are all changes she may have to adjust to.

Changes will happen but the question is are we ready for the changes and what preparation are we making for the changes?
Stay positive and encouraged, knowing that your sunshine is about to shine again.

A father on his death-bed called his wife and son to bid them farewell. In the midst of the tears the son drew closer to his father to hear his last words to him. His father whispered in his ear and said “Son, don’t do life like I did. I didn’t do right by you or your mother and never really made a difference”. He then died.

If you had only six months to live, how would you live your life? How would you spend your time? Who would you spend your time with? What would you do?

You can never make a difference until you discover your purpose on earth. In the place of purpose significance is birthed and life finds meaning.

Purpose is becoming who you were born to be; doing what you were created to do, having what you were created to have within a specific time frame, that if well understood it could influence your generation and the generation yet unborn. Thereby leaving your thumb print on the document of destiny.

So how are you spending your time? Whom are you spending your time with, how are they helping you to grow? The father who was on the death bed may have thought he had all the time in the world to do all the great things he wanted to do. Be a good Husband to his wife, be a great father to his son and generally live out his dream, but life was cut short.

The truth is tomorrow is not promised. We are all living but we don’t know when our time will be cut off. One could say we’re on borrowed time and each day spent is important and can never be brought back. We enjoy reading about people who have left a legacy in this world or going to the museums and seeing people who done marvellous things that we are now enjoying, but what are we going to leave behind? Are we only going to be remembered by our family members when we die or are we going to leave our very own legacy?

Some people may not want to be remembered, they just want to go through the process of living and then dying as if they never existed. Well…. I choose to be different, I choose to leave a great name for my unborn children and the generation to come, I choose to leave my print on this world, even when I die they must know that I once lived.

Whatever you are doing in life, do it in the best way that you can. If you’re a singer, sing like you’ve never sang before. If it’s serving, serve like you’ve never served before. In all that you do, do it like only you alone can do it. No one can play football like you do. No one can style clothes like you do. No one can motivate like you do. Whatever you do understand that no one can do it like you do it. But YOU, yes YOU have to believe it first before anyone else can believe it.

So be a go getter and JUST DO IT

Love Always

This blog is about the renewal of the mind, overcoming past failures and using them as a stepping stone for the future.

Let’s face it; we’ve all had challenges in our lives. We’ve had things we did not expect occurring. Some things we can change, whilst others we cannot change. Regardless of the challenges, they have all formed us into the person we are today,

Life is a journey and we are all bound to come across different hurdles that we must learn to jump. Some people choose to get stuck in the past and a few years later they realise that so much time was wasted on things they had absolutely no control over. Things happen in life to teach us lessons, now it’s our duty as students of life to learn from our past mistakes and make sure that if the test was to come again we are able to pass.

I have had my fair share of heartache and disappointments but one thing I have learned or I am learning in my journey in life is that , whatever I experience or go through, am not the first to go through it and I certainly won’t be the last. I refuse to beat myself up about what could have been and am working daily on what can be.

So join me on this journey of ‘Finding our way’

We are all on a journey and I hope you get to your desired destination.

Love always
